Craig Fielder Memorial Award
The Craig Fielder Memorial Award was created to honor one of the University of Virginia’s most outstanding varsity football players. Though a fine athlete, Craig’s legacy to the University is not superior athletic achievement, but rather the embodiment of the qualities of leadership in character and sportsmanship, unwavering competitive spirit and untiring determination in overcoming adversity. His long and courageous battle with cancer and his death on October 16, 1987, should serve as an inspiration to all athletes who must face hardship and as a reminder that true achievement is measured not by athletic success but by the individual’s effort. The award is presented annually to the varsity athlete who best demonstrates the qualities embodied by Craig Fielder.
